When Carl and I lived in Southern Utah a couple years ago, we got into this strange little activity called Geocaching with our good friends Artie and her hubby Lynn. What is geocaching, you ask. I always say it’s like a treasure hunt. You need a handheld GPS, a good pair of shoes, and if you are me, a camera! For a little more info, go here.
Like I said, we used to do this strange activity a couple times a week at minimum..but then we moved to WA state and we tried it there, but it was just too wet and rainy..Fast forward to now, we are living in the Southern CA desert, not a lick of rain in sight, and yesterday Carl and I decided to explore the area just behind us in the foothills a couple miles away..there is a dirt road that leads from our housing development and goes all the way up the hill to Yucca Valley. Pretty much need a 4 wheel drive, and we have the jeep, so I think a trip up that road is going to happen pretty soon while it’s still cool. This is a MAP of the route. We found an abandoned ‘camp’ that was owned by the Metropolitan Water District in the1930’s.. it’s cement buildings dilapidated, graffittied and all shot up, plus zillions of spent bullet casings. Now we did not hear any shooting going on while we were there, but lots of evidence. We will go back, further up the hill there won’t be any shooting going on..just treasure hunting. We did see the MWD siphons and there was a huge structure and we could hear the water rushing somewhere below..water from the Colorado River rushing to the Los Angeles area. It was actually really interesting!
Anyway, we only found a couple of ‘caches’ but we got our feet ‘wet’ again with our treasure hunting.. we took the car so we did not go very far..next time the jeep. And I wish Artie and Lynn would come and go with us, that woman makes the BEST egg salad sandwiches..that and we just miss them tons..
And of course I took pictures. I ALWAYS take pictures! Enjoy!
Almost home…

Wow! You were brave to venture out there without your 4wheeler. Just wondered where you were as I am a So. Calif. girl. Looks like you found some interesting "cache"(Don't know if that is the correct way to use the word). Gotta remember this for Scrabble.
ReplyDeletelooks like you had a great time! Love the picture! Keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like fun...and maybe a little scary? ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Ladies, it was fun, i think we are going back tomorrow, Beverly we will take the jeep! and Lunch and plenty of water, not sure how far we will make it 'up the hill' but gets us out of the house and it is fun..a good place to chat too, in the jeep, no radio or distractions..Amanda, no not scary at all..the older I get, the less afraid I am..

Hi Barb. This sounded fun. I need to do some more adventurous things in life so maybe I should try it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blogs. I loved reading yours and will be adding it to my list of favorites!
You asked how I was losing weight. I'm really trying to cut things like sugar and refined carbs and right now I've only committed to 30 minutes a day on my treadmill even if it means doing three 10 minute walks. I'm not weighing and measuring food but am trying to be mindful of how much I'm eating. I eat when I'm hungry but try to make it snacks that are nutritious and not empty calories (again, avoiding sugar, baked goods, etc.).
Looking forward to reading more of your posts!
I love going out into the desert like that and finding abandoned stuff. We gotta do it when I get there in March.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time.
Miss you.

ReplyDeleteHey, thanks so much for finding my blog AS WELL as me on Facebook! I think your geocaching sounds like fun! And such interesting things you've seen and shown us!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

Glad you're having fun...never know what you'll find. Seems strange not to see snow on the ground! We can't wait until Spring to take the quads out exploring. There are so many fun places in the desert to explore. Glad to see Carl is wearing his sling. Chuck stepped off the sidewalk today and went down hard (new glasses)...depth perception is a little off. He's leaving Sat. morning for the funeral. Bill/Linda/family coming up tomorrow and leaving Friday. MISS YOU GUYS!!!
ReplyDeleteHello! I just saw your comment on my blog about the curtains I had in my great room - I meant to list them on craigslist, but haven't gotten around to it yet. So they are currently folded up and living in a closet. If you would like them, they are yours - contact me and we'll work something out - alannalanglois@sbcglobal.net
